Topaz and UNICEF ... Making a difference

Unicef Flag

At Topaz we believe in a better world, that's why we have joined together with UNICEF to provide aid for some of the world's poorest children.

On January 15th 2009, Topaz and UNICEF launched an exciting new campaign which aims to raise up to one million euro over the next three years to help children survive.

Our "2 cents can make a world of difference" campaign commences in our company owned sites  from Monday 19th of January.

What's it all about?

The method is so simple - we will simply ask every customer if they would like to add on 2 cents to their transaction when they make a purchase. We will then give this money to UNICEF who will use it to provide childern with basic neccessities such as clean water.

How far does 2 cent go?

Water is life. Yet across the world, one billion people do not have access to safe water. Waterborne illness is the second highest cause of childhood death in the world. 2 cent can buy 2 water purification tablets, which can purify up to 10 litres of water, enabling several children to drink and wash safely.

What to look out for?

From January 19th, you will see images like this in our 100 company owned Topaz sites.

You will then know that when you're in this site we will ask you for your consent to add 2 cents onto your purchase. We will then give this money to UNICEF.

At Topaz we are very excited about entering into this partnership with UNICEF to raise money for UNICEF's child suvival programmes. We hope that you - our customers - will be happy to join with us to support this initiative.

Helping our Irish neighbours

Being an Irish owned company, we also realise how important it is to support Irish charities. Every year we select an Irish charity partner for the year and assist the nominated organisation by placing their collection boxes in our all of our company owned service stations

This year, we have selected Temple Street Children's Hospital as our Retail Charity Partner.

All monies raised through Topaz customer donations at over 100 company owned sites will go towards the purchase of new hi-tech incubators for the Hospital.

The Giraffe Omnibed Incubator is a neonatal intensive care station which replicates the conditions of a womb for premature and new-born babies who are in need of specialized medical care.

Denise Fitzgerald, CEO of the Fundraising Office at CUH said; “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Topaz charity partnership for the coming year. Giraffe Omnibed incubators are life-saving neonatal incubators which are used in the care of some of our most vulnerable patients. These units cost approximately €50,000 each and with the help of Topaz and their customers we would hope to purchase several of them at the end of this year long initiative.”

“On behalf of the children, staff and parents at Temple Street, I would like to thank Topaz staff nationwide for the wonderful support they are giving to the Hospital” she said.

Topaz & The Special Olympics

We are proud supporters of Special Olympics Ireland. The 2007 Topaz Triple Crown golf competition involved bringing teams from Scotland, England and Wales over to Dublin to compete against the Irish Team.  We were delighted to host the athletes and their families and ensured that they enjoyed all that Irish hospitality has to offer.  Topaz staff made up a team of volunteers to caddy, score and help facilitate this 2 day event.  Coinciding with the Triple Crown success of the Irish Rugby team the IRFU allowed us to borrow the Rugby Triple Crown trophy (photo inset) for the prize giving ceremony, to the joy of all participants. The 2008 Topaz Triple Crown takes place in the Belfry Golf Club, Birmingham.
