TOP GEAR SPEEDSTER ACHIEVES 62.5% SAVING FOR FUEL EFFICIENCY FILM

DRIVERS URGED TO BEAT BUDGET AND VAT INCREASES BY DRIVING SMART IN 2012

Tuesday December 20th 2011. A new short film which shows motorists how they can reduce their fuel bill by driving efficiently and which features former ‘Stig’ Ben Collins of Top Gear fame and the AA’s Nicola Hudson has just gone live on the Topaz website – www.topaz.ie

For the film Collins first drove the sporty Mazda 2 around the Mondello track in his ‘normal’ style using a litre of regular fuel. Following an efficient driving tutorial from Nicola and using Topaz fuel, the duo consumed 62.5% less fuel on the second drive.

“I have to say I was apprehensive getting into the car for the first drive with Ben” Nicola said. “As you can see from the film it was a hair raising experience! Ben definitely found it difficult to take his foot of the accelerator – old habits die hard -  but we persevered and thanks to a combination of using Topaz fuel – which is of course AA quality checked – and the efficient driving tips, we achieved very impressive savings’ she said.

Topaz Director Paul Candon said it was clear motorists wanted value for money, especially in light of the Budget and Vat increases on fuels.

‘Not all fuels are the same. The additive in Topaz fuels makes them more fuel efficient. If drivers use Topaz fuels and follow the driving efficiency tips outlined in the film, they will save money. It really was eye opening to see the figures Ben and Nicola achieved and the potential savings which we can all make on an annual basis are considerable’ Candon concluded.

TOPAZ TOP TEN FUEL EFFICIENT DRIVING TIPS

  • Ensure your vehicle is serviced regularly.
  • Ensure the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.
  • Plan your journey in advance and remove unnecessary weight from the car (golf clubs, roof racks etc) and keep windows closed.
  • Change up early through the gears. Shift up at around 2,000 rpms for a diesel car and 2.500 revolutions  for a petrol car (depending on vehicle)
  • Ensure you adopt a smooth style of driving – ease into acceleration
  • Avoid tailgating. Keep your distance between vehicles to ensure smooth braking  Reduce your speed, driving at or within speed limits. Driving at 110 KPH uses 15% more fuel than at 80 KPH.
  • Use cruise control for motorway driving to maintain a constant speed, as it can lead to average fuel savings of 7%
  • If you have stopped for more than 40 seconds, save fuel by switching off the engine
  • Use the air conditioning sparingly as it can reduce fuel consumption by as much as 20%.
